Chinese scientists have successfully transplanted a pig's liver into a brain-dead human being, a world first.

Healthcare workers at the Fourth Military Medical University in China transplanted liver tissue from a genetically modified pig into a brain-dead human. The liver functioned stably for 10 days and was then terminated at the request of the family.
Previously, heart and kidney transplants from pigs had been performed, but the liver had never been successful. In recent years, scientists in the US had performed liver transplants, but they could not ensure that the liver could perform its function healthily, so the body could not accept the liver.
He stated that after minor DNA corrections are made to prevent the immune system from rejecting the organs, they will be able to spend this period in a very healthy way while waiting for a donor.
Professor Lin Wang, lead author of the study, said:
Professor Peter Friend, an expert in organ transplantation at the University of Oxford, said: "This is an important piece of work for the development of the field. Although the genetic modifications are similar to those used in recent heart and kidney transplants, it is difficult to say at this stage how well transplanting an organ from one species to another will help a patient with liver failure. However, this study shows that genetic editing can prevent liver rejection.
